To understand Images, one must understand ZE Records. In 1980, the label was the absolute epicenter of "mutant disco," No Wave, and artsy post-punk. Suicide Romeo—consisting of Pierre Goddard, Michel Bellocq, Jean-Louis Wimsberg, Frédérick Goddard, and saxophonist Daniel Brunetti—brought a distinctly French sensibility to the label’s roster. They took the existential dread of UK bands like Joy Division and combined it with Continental art-school detachment.

If the album has a weak point, it is its songwriting depth. Critics often point out that Suicide Romeo functions like a flawless backing band in search of a defining visionary songwriter. Many tracks start and end in the exact same emotional space, relying on a great groove rather than dynamic progression.

However, what they lack in complex songwriting, they completely make up for in atmosphere. It is the ultimate "vibe" record for fans of dark '80s aesthetics.
