Capital Sentimental – What The Pope Does In His Sparetime CD
From the start it is clear that Capital Sentimental refuses to color within the lines. The album is a conceptual, psychedelic trip that playfully wonders what the Pope gets up to once the Vatican doors close. With tracks like "Washing The Holy Robe," "Blessed By The Pope," "The Papamobile," and the closing "Habemus Papam," the band creates a universe that is as satirical as it is mysterious.
Musically, the quartet refuses to be pigeonholed. What is described online as a "versatile musical style" translates, over the course of the album, into a breathtaking blend of genres. The band effortlessly fuses the hypnotic soundscapes of space rock with the complex structures of psychedelic prog. Yet, while other space rock bands drift in a cosmic void, Capital Sentimental suddenly drags the listener deep into the mud. Heavy, slow doom metal riffs unexpectedly break through the compositions, only to dissolve back into abstract jazz improvisations and unconventional avant-garde structures. This contrast between ethereal cosmic atmospheres and crushing walls of sound creates a constant, palpable tension.
