Baby Guru – Pieces CD PROMO
Baby Guru is a band where all sorts of different styles and genres pass in review. A year and a half after the release of their self-titled debut album, those various styles can be heard on their second work, titled Pieces. The main styles you can hear are psychedelic 60s and acid rock, along with pure experimentation forming the solid foundation of this album. Baby Guru draws inspiration from the raw 60s.
While the sound might seem retro, modern synthesizers and reverb tricks are applied in abundance. Instinctive groovers, African percussion, and colorful psychedelia ensure that the music consists of many layers and different types of genres. A track like ‘Cyclamen Persicum’ is entirely instrumental and built on an electronic experimental sound, making the whole thing brilliant. Other tracks, however, rely on those warm vocal harmonies. Pieces is a record that manages to delight you, because the element of surprise kicks in thirteen times. And yet, it still borders on that dark, raw side. This is how these Greeks describe it in ‘Necessary Voodoo’: “Get away from your darkest times / there is a new thing going on…”.
A beautiful description of the record that Baby Guru delivered in November 2012. All in all, Pieces is a record you can easily grow into, simply because it contains a lot of material to truly grow into. It keeps the interest high, precisely because of those different styles and experiments. It is a musical haunted house, where you wonder time and again which side will surprise you next. And that is enjoyable; it surprises, and after all, it won't get boring quickly. And isn't that precisely the essence of making music?
