Spear Of Destiny ‎– World Service (LP)

The sonic identity of World Service is heavily defined by its 1985 mid-80s production. Co-produced by the band alongside Rusty Egan (famous for his work with Visage and the New Romantic scene), the LP features a heavy dose of reverb, prominent saxophone arrangements, and slick New Wave production choices.

While it retains the anthemic, tribal post-punk core of Brandon's previous outfit Theatre of Hate, it wraps those ideas in a grander, pop-rock sheen. Frontman Kirk Brandon delivers his signature, dramatic, and almost operatic vocal delivery—rousing the listener like a leader heading into battle. Critically, this "mock-heroic" bluster splits opinions: some find it majestically powerful, while others argued that the over-the-top singing sometimes overpowers the melodies. 

For listeners who love the bombastic, anthemic side of 80s alternative rock (reminiscent of Big Country, The Cult, or early Simple Minds), it is a classic. Tracks like "Mickey" and "World Service" are top-tier post-punk compositions.
