RK Veulpoepers BV ‎– Een Frisse Wind (LP)

The text inside the LP’s gatefold sleeve advocates taking control of everything possible oneself—to counter the money-grubbing profiteers and bring a better society closer. The Stichting RK Veulpoepers BV foundation was established to facilitate this.

While their debut album Diarree, relied largely on atmosphere and the hit "Den Egelantier," Een Frisse Wind is far more ambitious. It features better-developed lyrics for some of the tracks, strongly arranged instrumental pieces, and greater cohesion across the album as a whole.

The standout lyrics appear in "Troostlied"—about what truly matters in life—and "Vlinder," which captures the vulnerability and fragility of life in just four lines. The latter is an interpretation of "La bourrée papillon/La togne" by the French group La Chiffonie, whose music significantly influenced the Veulpoepers' sound.

Two instrumental tracks that were exceptionally well-crafted are "Geusje en Geuzetje" (based on the traditional "Flop-Eared Mule") and "Het gebroken schoteltje." The tracks mentioned so far all appear on Side A of the LP.

That is not to say Side B lacks strong songs, but the mood is different. While "Brederood" and "Besteksonnet" (inspired by Prime Minister Dries van Agt’s austerity plan, Bestek ’81) offer reflections on social injustice, the other three tracks are of a different nature: weed, jazz, and a big cow are the subjects, delivered with humor and conviction.

One track not yet mentioned is the album's opener: "Telegraafgelul" (Telegraph Bullshit). The title makes the song's subject perfectly clear: the right-wing daily newspaper De Telegraaf—a publication the band naturally detests.
