Hiigo – Leven In De Leegte (LP, Pink, Signed)

“Leven In de Leegte” is the debut album from Hiigo, a band from Zwolle that first made its mark in 2021 with the debut single ‘Laat Me Los’. Rather than a mere collection of previously released singles, it stands as a cohesive work in its own right. What makes it impressive is that Hiigo manages to showcase a unique sound, despite the many artists who have paved the way before them.

A band with its own festival (Tankstation)—that immediately brings a group like Bløf to mind. Yet, due to the rawer vocals and more direct lyrics, there are few musical similarities. Hiigo’s greatest strength lies in its ability to find the shortest path to the heart; ‘Komt Wel Goed’ is a fine example of this. With ‘Iets Om Van Te Dromen’, the band also demonstrates that it is more than capable of delivering a genuine ballad.

The songs are woven together by a series of electronic interludes. The first is skillfully integrated into the intro of the opening track, ‘Alles Wat Ik Zoek’. The song seems to serve as a response to U2’s ‘I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For’. That happiness is short-lived, however; by the next track, the protagonist is left with ‘Niets Meer’ (Nothing Left) and can only see his great love with his eyes closed. Ultimately, ‘Leven In De Leegte’ concludes that a broken relationship need not be a reason to hit the pause button on life.

A lack of fear regarding what lies ahead or what has already passed runs like a common thread through the songs on “Leven In De Leegte”. Hiigo has wholeheartedly embarked on an adventure that listeners can enjoy to the fullest.
