Dez Mona – Hilfe Kommt CD
On Hilfe Kommt, Dez Mona returns to his roots a little bit in terms of feeling. Producer Paul Webb (once bassist in Talk Talk and as ‘Rustin Man’ producer of the solo album of Beth Gibbons of Portishead) mixed Nicolas Rombouts’ double bass all the way to the front again and restored the unique click with Frateur’s voice, in songs with theatrical lyrics about the confusing world called love or friendship. The album starts with menacing bass playing and ditto words in the mighty opener Beyond Redemption.
The band maintains that rare high level for more than three quarters of an hour. There is beautiful jazzy drumming to enjoy, the piano and accordion perform wonders here and there and if the song can really stand it, there are wind instruments, even more strings or that climax. However, it never gets very bombastic. That, and the presence of a number of remarkably accessible gems (Get Out Of Here, Carry On) make Hilfe Kommt exactly the album that Dez Mona needs to win over an even wider audience.
