Gary Kemp – Insolo (CD Signed) / Spandau Ballet
While Spandau Ballet decide whether or not they can face one another again for a reunion, Gary Kemp has unleashed his inner David Bowie on a solo album of lush, tortured ballads. The six-minute title track sounds like an existential crisis set to tense strings and pounding piano chords; elsewhere there are shades of Pink Floyd to the clean, yearning guitar solos and widescreen atmospherics, particularly on I Remember You, a reminiscence on the impact that Bowie’s 1973 Ziggy Stardust concert at the Hammersmith Odeon in west London had on the teenage Kemp. Nostalgic, wistful and filled with an exquisitely romantic sense of despair and futility, this is an album to wallow in
