Jim Sullivan – U.F.O. (LP Blue / Green Swirl)
Some albums are shining examples of innovation and quality that stand the test of time. You and I know many of these records that are in the mainstream. But for every great album that is well known, there are dozens of other masterfully crafted albums obscured by time and circumstance.
U.F.O. by Jim Sullivan is one of these unknown records. Released in 1969, the album is an eclectic blend of genres performed by the best musicians in the world. Its tracks focus on aliens, the supernatural, and prophecy. Add to the mix that Jim mysteriously disappeared without a trace after the album was released, and the legend of the album grows.
Because of the story of Sullivan and his LP are so strange, many people who know of the record listen out of novelty — to hear the weird album by the alien guy. But fans of the record don’t hesitate to call it a masterpiece, and for good reason. Beyond the sheen of strangeness around the album, there are countless layers to the music itself that make it greater than any story told about it.
Like most listeners today, I was turned on to the album because of its legend. I researched Jim Sullivan, trying to get to the bottom of what happened to him out in the desert. But once I learned all I could about the mystery of the man, I continued to listen to the album. It turns out that the music of the album is far from a simple novelty. It’s not just something you listen to once and then move on.
