Korjen – Sabur CD
The overwhelming opener ‘Marike’ in jazz-pop style let great expectations blossom. The ‘Czech’ company (with members from Poland, Bosnia and Slovakia) makes music on cultural foundations with modern influences. ‘A w nieziele’ is based on a Polish story about woman and devil, translated into a contemporary version of the turbulent Balkan past. Jazzy drum rhythms, impressive melody lines for guitar and keyboards, enchanting harmony vocals form the ingredients of a great ‘Mesecina’.
Combining ethno and jazz seems tailor-made for Korjen. Hence the free style in ‘Chem Krna’ which, according to the booklet, is indeed impossible to dance to, but is very captivating as art rock. Even more rock in ‘Konopa’ with repetitive vocal parts that pull you away from this world. Hearing the experimental ‘A Kiedny’, memories of a combination of the Hungarian group Kolinda, the industrial sound of the Norwegian new wavers Holy toy and vocally our own Laïs flared up. (Far-fetched but still worth discovering).
On Sabur fifteen great modern Slavic songs with explanation in a neat 20-page booklet. Still need superlatives for this exceptionally beautiful and rich world album?
