Buffalo Tom – Smitten CD
Smitten, the sixth Buffalo Tom album and the last before their decade-long hiatus, was released in 1998 by Polydor Records.
Apparently they’d decided to go in a more keyboard-heavy direction on this record, and a piano player named Phil Aiken was an unofficial fourth member of the band for this record. That didn’t prevent them from coming up with some good shit in places here–album opener “Rachael,” a truly excellent Chris Colbourn song, is a favorite of mine, as is the acoustic Janovitz ballad “Postcard.” “Scottish Windows” is kind of weak lyrically but a beautiful piece of music. The strengths, such as they are, come from the ballads.
