Wayward Soul – Brothers From Another Planet CD / KLF
Rave veteran and dance music pioneer Tony Thorpe has taken a strange sideways step with his new Wayward Soul pseudonym. Returning to dance music’s roots, the former KLF collaborator has embraced his old hardcore roots, a potentially disastrous move.
Luckily Thorpe manages to rise to the challenge, creating a work that’s equal parts retro and futuristic and 100% diverse. For example, compare the difference between the hip-hop meets breaks single, ‘DJ Friendly’ and the gnarly electro of album finale, ‘Crater Face’, or the bizarre cover version of Kraftwerk’s classic ‘Showroom Dummies’ and the pseudo scary mock horror nuances on ‘Serum’. The rave breaks, female ragga and guitar power chords of ‘Real Wild Child’ and Divine Styler’s super fast delivery on ‘PMT’ are other notable highlights. Another uncompromising release from an unconventional artist.
