Me & The Heat ‎– Game Of Position (LP)

€4.95

Germany has been producing fantastic musicians for decades, in every genre. A very good band that has perhaps achieved a greater cult status in the Netherlands than in Germany is Me & The Heat, led by singer Tom Meger, whose distinctive voice falls somewhere between Captain Beefheart, Joe Strummer, and Nick Cave.

After serving a lengthy prison sentence, ex-junkie Meger, who once roamed the streets of Amsterdam, devoted himself to a music career, resulting in the 1984 LP "Game of Position" by Me & The Heat, a post-punk band from the Ruhr area with horns and a jazzy slant. The magnificent album even features a track with a Talking Heads-esque funk rhythm, "Babylon, Babylon." All the songs have a dark undercurrent, fueled by Meger's alternately growling, plaintive, squeaking, and whining vocals, gritty lyrics, and terrifying delivery.

The idiosyncratic singer-songwriter clashed with guitarist and trumpeter Bernd Kramer during the recording of the LP. The band didn't last very long. Meger continued solo under the name Tom Mega and even ventured into (German) chansons, but major success eluded him despite the high quality of his songs. He released no new music after 1994 and limited his performances to the Ruhr region.
