Phil Collins – Finally... The First Farewell Tour (2x DVD)
The picture, sound, and extras are fantastic. A notable feature is that the disc includes the original music video for almost every song performed. The first DVD opens with electrifying drumming: it begins with Phil delivering a brilliant drum solo, followed by the arrival of his regular drummer, Chester Thompson. When percussionist Luis Conte joins them to complete the trio, things really take off. This solo can be viewed from multiple angles, and you even have the option to zoom in—an impressive start. What follows is a nostalgic treat; "Against All Odds" is performed in a beautiful version, featuring a particularly striking saxophone solo.
It is clear that Collins is completely in his element on stage. He is humorous, chats with the audience in broken French, and jumps, skips, and dances alongside his backing vocalists during "Hang In Long Enough." The Cyndi Lauper cover "True Colors" is performed a cappella by Collins and his backing singers; it is breathtakingly beautiful, and with the audience clapping along en masse, it’s impossible not to get goosebumps.
Phil Collins is clearly proud of his backing vocalists—and rightly so! All five of them—two men and three women—sing absolutely fantastically. Just watch and listen to "Come With Me," and you’ll be convinced. A highlight is "Separate Lives," in which Collins performs a duet with backing singer Amy Keys. What an incredible voice she has!
The second DVD opens with "In the Air Tonight"—considered by many to be his best solo track ever, an opinion I share. The tension is built up in a sublime way; then, as he slowly walks toward his drum kit, the song reaches its climax. It remains an impressive track, especially live. Following such a thrill, the lackluster "Dance Into The Light" comes as a bit of a jarring shift.
In the amusing "Wear My Hat," Collins once again demonstrates his fantastic gift for facial expressions and humor. On "Easy Lover," it is the backing vocalists who, once again, make a strong impression—I wouldn’t be surprised if we hear more from them in the future. As is tradition, Collins closes with "Take Me Home," bringing a fantastic live performance to an end.
If that’s still not enough for you, the second disc offers several hours of additional, entertaining, and interesting content. "A Bit Of A Parking Problem," in particular, is highly enjoyable and reveals the massive operation behind these shows. Phil Collins has truly become a phenomenon when it comes to live performance, and he will be missed in the stadiums. Fortunately, we can relive it all time and again through these two discs.
