Apollonia - Apollonia (LP)
The self-titled solo debut by Patricia Apollonia Kotero, released in 1988 via Warner Bros. Records, is a fascinating time capsule of a specific musical transition era. Four years after her iconic breakthrough in Prince’s Purple Rain and her brief stint fronting Apollonia 6, Kotero set out to establish her own identity as a mainstream pop solo artist.
Stepping out from Prince’s shadow meant trading the raw, eccentric Minneapolis Sound for the polished, hit-ready freestyle, Miami dance-pop, and early New Jack Swing that dominated late-'80s radio. The result is a glossy, highly danceable LP that sits comfortably alongside the early work of Paula Abdul, Janet Jackson, and freestyle groups like Exposé.
