Cedar Walton – Three Sundays In The Seventies "Live" At The Left Bank CD
Many jazz artists who performed for Baltimore's legendary Left Bank Jazz Society were so impressed with the audience that they would often return several times within a year. The versatile pianist Cedar Walton was one. Leading a trio with Herbie Lewis (bass) and Billy Higgins (drums) in September 1971, Walton takes John Coltrane's "Naima" to impressive places.
With Higgins and Sam Jones (bass) in February 1974, he is joined by Clifford Jordan (tenor saxophone) and Bill Hardman (trumpet) for Walton's originals, "Plexus" and "I'm Not So Sure." Bluesy singer Etta Jones brings the somewhat rote "Blow Top Blues" and a fine version of "Don't Go to Strangers" to a February 1972 show. Throughout, Walton plays the role of host more than leader, letting bandmembers take frequent solos, and playing in a spare, economical manner himself.
