Jasper Steverlinck ‎– Songs Of Innocence (2 CD)

€9.95

It is somewhat ironic that the great success for Jasper Steverlinck did not come with his band Arid - once a great Belgian promise - but as a guest singer with the girls' choir Scala. Together with the Kolacny brothers (the accompanists of this choir) on piano, Steverlinck sang a version of David Bowie's Life On Mars. The song was included on the soundtrack of the children's film Science Fiction and became a huge hit in Belgium. The success resulted in Steverlinck's first solo album Songs Of Innocence (2004), completely filled with covers. He gives his versions of songs by Elton John, Bob Dylan, Labi Siffre, The Doors and Rufus Wainwright. Steverlinck has a distinctive high-pitched voice that is somewhat reminiscent of both Freddie Mercury and George Michael, providing the songs with a good dose of drama, and the musical accompaniment is sober and moody. Sometimes it is very pathetic, but the arrangements are beautiful and fans of Steverlinck's voice will certainly enjoy it. A downside is that it is nowhere mentioned who wrote the original versions, and with a cover album that is at least sloppy.
