ILA – Ayna (LP Red Eclipse)
ILA knows what tension is, knows the intensity of a good build-up, and has no trouble delivering a catharsis. Ayna pushes, ripples, pulls, and always bursts out at just the right moment. Take “Make It Easy”, only in second place, but already welcome to shoot the first gear of opener “Glory” to fifth. Drummer Cas Kinnaer hammers straight ahead, the guitars split the North Sea; it’s racing.
But those slow ones are also important. “Pleasures” is the rolling back and forth of the waves from which that furious “All Again” is born, “Atonia” is post-rock-like fiddling with just enough intensity, “Home” slowly derails like a peat fire that suddenly flares up again. “In Reverie” languishes languorously over crystal clear strings: “I’m not mine / I will be yours / For tonight”. The intensity with which Cicek sings “barrage me with lightning / bring me to dust and ash / I love you I love you I love you” in the irresistible “Sun” is of a possession that made us as other half blush. Here is loving with surrender.
And when it's time to tear it up again, ILA tears it up. In "Ben Anlamam" it suddenly comes out in Turkish, and that sounds just as inspired. No idea what exactly she's screaming there, but you can feel that the whole earthquake in her second homeland has affected her. "Kill My Mind" is brutal and short-tempered; hell hath no fury. Kinnaer sends an interesting, disruptive beat in the background that catches your attention every time.
